I had been sold a pair of metal "C" clip looking things by a local bike shop which absolutely sucked and were horribly uncomfortable, so I bought these as an alternative. They are definitely an improvement, but there are a couple of things to consider:
1. They tend to slide down my legs. The pants that I wear while riding are water-resistant pants with a very smooth texture, and don't provide a grippy surface for these. I have to tighten them up quite a bit so they stay, which in turn tightens the pants more and makes it harder to pedal. The quick fix for this is to use a couple of safety pins to hold the leg bands in place vertically on the pants. This is much more comfortable and also nowhere near as annoying.
2. If you have really large calves or ankles, these might not be long enough to fit you or allow you to place them where you want on your leg. I wear one on each leg so they end up down in the ankle area, but if you want to wear both on just the chain side/right leg, you might have a hard time wearing one higher.
